On The Road To Being a Marksman - Part 13 - Loot Combinatorial Headaches Cause Mistakes
I did everything I said I would in my previous post. It involved buying a T9.5 and a T10.5, downshifting two use T9.5x2 and shuffling over to use different T10.5x2. It required gems and re-gemming. It required a chest enchant. It required me shooting out to Ebon Hold for the helm enchant. It required me to go to IF to respec. It required me to reset all my macros in the UI. I had to deal with addon issues from the patch. I tried some target dummy stuff. I made another Outfitter gear set. I did all this an hour before the raid.
But I made a mistake. I had been using the DPS calculator which also helpfully shows your hit rating and percentage. I wrongly thought it didn't include my Draenei buff. But it looks like it did take that into account.
I loaded a full +3% from talents. I snagged a Draenei in group for a +1%. But my "DPS-MM-Sting" gear set only had +3% hit. 3 + 3 + 1 = 7. We need 8. I'm looking at this after loading up on some new arrows and thinking about how I just regemmed everything. And then the raid started.
I got nervous and flipped to SV for the trash. I knew the sting set would suck for trash anyway. I flipped back to MM for Marrowgar and auto-equipped my new my sting gear set. I was second or third on damage done and had three missed auto shots. I didn't check the rest. One thing I learned though: it's difficult to roll your sting forward and still do a lot of immediate damage to people who are spiked. You kinda have to hold back a little.
So I was a little disappointed, but I kept at it. On Deathwhisper, I did my adds job. But again, I had to retain the Chimera just for the boss who I had a nice sting rolling on. Luckily the adds go down quickly so I didn't feel bad about the less-than-amazing damage I did on them. That said, I managed the #1 spot on damage for that fight.

For the Lootship Battle, I didn't take a cannon and I didn't just shoot from our deck. Instead I rocketed over and killed the mages. That was fun. But for that fight, I flipped gear (but not spec) to my previous MM-DPS gear set. No stings to really roll there...
For Saurfang, I went with the stings. It was reasonably easy to keep the nice sting refreshed and still kill my beast (and help with others). Again, I had to restrain myself and not completely unload on the beasts.
For Dreamwalker I went with an obvious non-sting set but again stayed with Marks. I probably should have flipped to SV for the better instants and traps, but no biggie.
We then hit the Princes. We don't have good combatlogs from the night because people were DC'ng quite often (thanks to the patch). That said, I think I went with stings for the Princes. We had FIVE hunters, so I didn't have any orb duties. I'm not sure if using crit-stings was a win or not on the fight. You end up targeting five different mobs in the fight or so.
We also hit VoA and cleared it looking for a mount drop. (No luck!) I stayed in my crit-sting gear and it was easy to keep it rolling throughout each fight there.
The crit-sting gear should be great for Rotface, and Festergut. I'm not sure about Putricide and his adds. I guess it depends on how many ranged we have and how fast they go down. There are also those two pauses where the sting can (will?) fall off.
That said, I think we're hitting Sindragosa tonight.

On The Road To Being a Marksman - Part 11 - New Gear and Enlightenment
Last night I had a free night and ran with our guild ICC-10. It isn't a completely consistent group. Some "ten man nights" there aren't 10. Other nights there are plenty of people to choose from. I've only run with the guild in ICC-10 three or four times. The two most recent runs were last night and at the end of April when we first nailed the Lich King to the floor. Last night we had a bunch of people new to heroic 10man versions. Myself being one of them.
In a little less than three hours we killed Marrowgar, Deathwhisper, Lootship, Deathbringer Saurfang, Festergut, and Rotface. There wasn't too much to learn and honestly Marrowgar seemed the most difficult. Perhaps it was most difficult because our ten man had two hunters (neither of us had done the heroics) and Marrowgar's melee hitbox is ridiculously large.
I had to swap to Survival on Saurfang so we'd have enough replenishment for the spam healers. It was just us two hunters. (We also had no locks so we couldn't use the pally DI-and-soulstone-back approach.)
It was a lot of fun learning some challenging fights. I also came away with two new pieces of gear from the night. I thought that the Pauldrons of Lost Hope should replace my Dual-Bladed Pauldrons without question at least for Marksman use. I also thought that Saurfang's Cold-Forged Band would find an easy home with my Marksman gear. I was in error. All the numbers showed equipping these as a DPS loss. And regardless of how I gemmed them.
My enlightenment came from re-reading some of my previous posts. I decided to use Zeherah's Hunter DPS Analyzer to change my shot rotation and remove Arcane Shot. This let everything click into place:

My enlightenment came from re-reading some of my previous posts. I decided to use Zeherah's Hunter DPS Analyzer to change my shot rotation and remove Arcane Shot. This let everything click into place:
- Don't use Arcane Shots for stand and shoot bosses for a DPS profit.
- Pull out the talents from the now less-used Improved Arcane and since I'm [amazingly] still above the hit cap dump them into either being the Hunter's Mark bitch or full bore steady shot which I'll now be spamming a bit more.
- HM on a personal basis is a +100 DPS win. I'll pull the other hunters along too of course. ;-)
- Full improved steady shot and rapid recuperation would help about the same with damage, but would work on adds. I may just split the difference a bit.
- We usually can rely on having a space goat so I am okay at 7% hit. But I will need to dip into the +hit talents with another gear swap.
- My Outfitter gear addon now auto-swaps gear sets for my primary and secondary talent tree swaps.
- I now do marginally better with armor pen gems now than with agility gems which is a first. I'll stay with agility gems in shared gear but move to armor pen gems in strictly Marksman gear. If I re-gemmed everything to armor pen I would get only about a 70 DPS gain. I would also hurt my Survival side. I may need to run SV for ten-mans in the future.

On The Road To Being a Marksman - Part 6
I keep doing some things wrong with this Marksman stuff.
First off, my instinct is to hit my Explosive Shot as soon as a mob needs some serious damage. My Explosive Shot button is actually my Chimera Shot button. So this is great on a boss who I have already stung. I slam that home every time it is available. But on add mobs or trash I'm usually not thinking to throw them a sting. That was a dps lose for Survival. So I'm hitting them with my big shot -- except it's really a Chimera without a sting to Chimera at all. Chimera fires off and then I realize it wasn't exactly a big hit. /sigh.
My second thing is I hit Serpent Sting accidentally too much. I hit it when I shouldn't. I do hit it when I need to upgrade my chimera rolling sting on a boss. But I also sometimes hit it and effectively downgrade the sting and waste the overlapped DoT to boot.
Why do I do this with Serpent Sting? Well, as SV I'm good -- very good -- at keeping my Serpent Sting up. As soon as it falls off, I slap it back on. I do this by a little macro trick of not having the button be available until I switch targets or until the duration expires. So I see the button become available again. I don't have this visual aid as MM. I just see it available and want to hit it.
I'm not doing Readiness as well as I could. This is mostly timing and knowing when a heroism will be sneaking in. We're also downing bosses quicker and quicker so it's harder to guess. Clearly I'd like to use rapid fire four times in a fight and manage to get some back to back kill shots. But it's a little bit of an art form and I'm only using finger paints at the moment.
I'm not doing burst damage on adds very well. I had to move backward on the blood beasts. And I felt hamstrung on Putricide adds. Maybe that's just the thing with Marks and if I don't like it on those bosses I should flip to SV.
So last night on Dreamwalker I flipped to SV. And then on the vampire Queen I was MM.

Consolation Gift
I don't usually do 10mans. I don't play *that* much to do 10's and 25's. But the 25man only summoned 20 players, so we rolled in to a continued LK and spent 2 hours learning him.

Hunters 3.3.3 EDITED TO ADD
Ferocious Inspiration: This ability is now an aura and provides 1/2/3% damage to all party or raid members within 100 yards and boosts the damage of Steady Shot by 3/6/9%.
So, is this really the case or just a typo in two places? Looks like a BM annoyance. I have to think that it's really what was advertised before by Ghostcrawler: a damage boost to Steady and Arcane by 3/6/9%.
EDITED TO ADD: It was just a bad typo!
Needle-Encrusted Scorpion: Volley and Explosive Shot can now properly trigger this trinket.
Grats Marksmen and SVs geared a little like marksmen!
Lock and Load: Fixed a bug where Lock and Load always proc'd 100% of the time from the first tick of Explosive Trap and never from additional ticks. It should now be 6% as advertised.
I guess I wasn't aware this was broken. My previous ICC-trash method was: MD-to-tank, drop Explosive Trap, disengage, get LnL proc, fire ES, tab, fire ES, tab, fire ES, multi-shot, Volley. Collect 10k dps on trash. Oh well. 3 mobs, 6% chance per mob per tick means it's a good chance that you'll get the proc in two ticks. The problem will be threat. Chalk this up as a bug fix that nerfs SV hunters - in PvP and trash.
Rapid Fire: Now triggers the global cooldown correctly.
That sucks a CD from our lives. Sucks a couple for Marksmen. Chalk this up as a straight up hunter nerf that wasn't necessary. EDIT: Hmm. Some comments from players at OutDPS think this is a bug fix that lets us use it during the GCD. Terrible wording on the fix if that is the case.
EDITED TO ADD: Actually they made it completely off the GCD. Go figure how that wording makes any sense... Anyway, grats again Marksmen!
Sniper Training: Reduced the time it takes to gain this effect so with lag it will feel more consistent with the 6 seconds stated in the tooltip.
Mmmkay. So, less than 6 seconds, but perhaps more than 5 seconds? Or maybe custom to the client lag? I guess this is an SV buff. 5.x seconds is still a fairly long time on some fights.
Mortal Shots: This talent was not correctly buffing Serpent Sting by the full amount.
Grats again Marksmen.
And the final one is.. Pets will get the ICC buff in 3.3.3. So grats all hunters, but especially to any people that want to re-try BM there. With the FI change it's supposed to be comparable to SV. And SV can do better than MM on some fights.

For Hunter DPS Completeness
Just worth mentioning in case you're in a cave, when 3.3 comes out (next week?), they will have fixed the ICC buff so it also applies to pets. This wasn't too noticeable for most raiders because the pet generally buffs the hunter. However if you're BM you would have been jonesin'. Then again, you probably don't care too much if you're raiding as BM.
Unless of course, you're pet-tanking. Then that'd be a nice pet buff.

Good Progress
I'm not usually able to attend Monday raids. I have family obligations. I logged in 45mins into the raid just to see how they were doing. I got an immediate raid invite. We made good progress on the Blood Queen. Each pull we had at least one person DC though. And we had plenty of people who had UI problems being able to properly target and hit '1'. Despite that we made it through the transition intact once or twice. So if we can stop the DCs and fix the UIs we're golden.
We also two-shotted Heroic Jaraxxas which was nice. I think some people got some ups.
Then three of us then dove into ICC-10 with the other seven slots filled up by alts of raiders or non-raiders. We got some quick badges off the first four bosses - and got the 10-man quest. There was a lot of DE'd gear which would have been upgrades for me a month or two ago. One item was an upgrade though: Saurfang's Cold-Forged Band.

Yay. Putricide Down
Got Professor Petri Cup down and got the simple achievement. Also got Blood Prince Council. And the Beasts of Northrend in Heroic. Very decent night. Putricide is no walk in the park. All timing on the adds. Heroic Beasts is also surprising how difficult it is even with "out-gearing" it.
Also felt good to finally be on top of the meters. #2 on all bosses for the night (melee were a close #1 and #3). And #1 on Putricide. That said, Putricide does favor ranged dps classes. And given the adds switching it would seem to favor SV over MM. Still it was nice.
Oh, and I was at over 800ms latency the first two hours of raiding. NFI why. My traceroutes were 600ms+ from my router to the first hop outside. I reset it but to no effect.

Going Uber in One Night
Last night's raid was kind to me. I got the Snowserpent Mail Helm which set aside my only T10, the entry level Ahn'Kahar Blood Hunter's Headpiece. Then I dropped a majority of my DKP on a VoA drop, the Sanctified Ahn'Kahar Blood Hunter's Handguards. This of course put me in a weird position. Do I use the lesser helm for the set bonus, or do I use the nicer one and skip the bonus? On the face, it appears to be better to go with the set bonus. Well, to make it a little more complex, after the raid I was left with over 60 Emblems of Frost. 60 allow you to buy the T10.0 shoulders or belt. Both were nice upgrades. I was working on it for over an hour of what to do.
Now, I could have just used the spreadsheet. But there was something else going on. My gearscore was one of the lowest in the raid. This doesn't really speak to how well anyone plays or how much anyone contributes. And I personally do perform well. But it has been one of the lowest gearscores. And by low, I mean 5200ish.
So I decided to go with the T10 shoulders for the set bonus, and to park the T10 helm in favor of the non-set 264 helm.
Then I looked at my other junk. I have iLevel 232 bracers. The crafted 245 are not any sort of justifiable upgrade.
Well, a Wintergrasp battle was about to begin and I figured I could use some honor and forget about some of the gear issues. When I was done in WG I was left with 65k honor. My PvP gear is around a 4000 gearscore. I haven't upgraded in at least an arena edition. I also had 340 emblems of triumph and could fill out my sub-Furious PvP gear easily. So I went browsing. What I found was interesting. I got the Wrathful Gladiator's Wristguards of Triumph bracers. It was a nice upgrade for my PvP set and will continue to be. I'm not one to lightly use PvP gear for PvE. It has that wasted resilience stat and often favors stamina. But these are a fairly sweet upgrade for PvE and will use them until I get an ICC upgrade there. I also picked up a new Furious helm and chest, bringing my PvP gear up to at least Furious, with some Relentless and Wrathful.
Then I looked at my last lagging iLevel 200 piece. It probably should be every raiding hunter's last lagging iLevel 200 piece (if they could afford it). It's still excellent for me. But I went and bought a dumb Mark of Supremacy. I won't use it except for very special short fights with a guaranteed immediate burst time. It was cheap and I had over 200 triumph emblems left.
I could justify the trinket purchase with claims about flipping to my high iLevel set for buffing my vehicles. But honestly, I just wanted to get a +100 to my gearscore. So now I flip to my high iLevel set before I log out. How pathetic am I?

Pet Tanks Can Dodge Like Mad
Damage to tanks is supposed to be more even (less spikey) and generally lighter. In making it less spikey they killed avoidance with the Chill of the Throne debuff. Every character gets it in the party or raid. All the tanks are quite familiar with this debuff.
Pets do not get that debuff.
Really.
Go Flash! Go Fluffy!

Kheldul's Weak Gear
Kheldul has some seriously weak gear. At least as viewed at the item level. He does have stacks and stacks of conquest and triumph badges. (So many that he filled out some of his PvP gear with them and still has plenty.) Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any upgrades.
One of his rings is level 213. He has tried to get the ToC-25 ring and the easy Ulduar-25 ring. Unfortunately his dice and/or DKP have always been found lacking. When it comes to rolling, he rolls a lot of 1's.
Both trinkets are level 200 (greatness and the mirror). Greatness is of course great. But the mirror does suck. He has a bunch of other trinkets with higher iLevels but they suck more. No ToC-25 love. None of the many drops from even Ulduar-25 either. Or even Sarth. And who is running Ulduar anymore? :(
The Herkuml War Token is certainly tasty. But honestly, would I go for it before I take new armor? 60 Emblems of Frost is a bit rich. I guess I should go ahead and grab the Triumph trinket. In order to make it work, I'll need to flip my +hit gems and macro it appropriately. I've gone through three big waves of +hit re-gem waves. When I'd really like to get some ToC-25 love. And of course, if/when I did I'd have to completely re-gem back.
In a related vein, Rilgon has some suggestions on class priority/usefulness of the Deathbringer's Will trinket.
And then there is the easiest upgrade ever. That will be pretty hot. I can't wait.

Hunter Macros for ICC's Lord Marrowgar and Lady Deathwhisper
Lord Marrowgar
/target Bone Spike
/startattack
As soon as he bone spikes people (1 person in 10man, 3 people in 25man) hit this targeting macro and free your fellow raiders. Make sure that your raid isn't too spread out -- otherwise you'll end up running all over the place to free people.
Make use of Deterrence when Sir-Whirls-a-Lot gets into your neighborhood in his phase two. Just don't blow it before you need it!
Lady Deathwhisper
For the adds, these are the targets we want to nuke. This macro will target them all appropriately and in appropriate prioritization. You specifically don't want to try and do physical damage to the Reanimated Fanatic which this macro specifically does not end up targeting.
/targetexact Cult Fanatic
/targetexact Cult Adherent
/targetexact Reanimated Adherent
Also, don't forget to occasionally toss a Vipersting on Lady Deathwhisper.
